2. Description of the Programme

The BSc Business Analytics is designed to prepare you for a career in organisations which are seeking to exploit the opportunities afforded by rapidly changing technologies and growth in availability of data. It provides you with the skills required to help businesses make data-informed decisions, including the ability to understand business problems and to use data to solve them.

The programme combines modules in data handling and analysis alongside modules which specifically explore business problems in areas such as marketing, people and operations.  The programme culminates in a capstone project, which will embed you into a sizeable business problem that draws upon various aspects of your newly developed Business Analytics skills. 

Our programme is also inspired by global challenges, and will draw upon University of Exeter’s world-leading environmental research.  There are increasing pressures on businesses to manage and report climate exposure in their supply chain and investment portfolios, mitigate risk of climate change and natural hazards on their operations, and manage their wider environmental impacts.  You will learn about these challenges, and how business analytics approaches can support businesses in overcoming them.

3. Educational Aims of the Programme

The BSc Business Analytics will:

  • Provide students with a solid grounding in the fundamentals of business and management.
  • Provide insight into the political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental considerations associated with increasing use of data and analytics in the global business environment.
  • Enable students to recognise and understand situations, across a range of sectors and functions, in which applications of business analytics could generate business value.
  • Equip students with the skills and knowledge required to follow careers related to business analytics, business and management.

The programme is modular in nature, with teaching and learning being undertaken through a range of contact hours and self-guided learning. Contact hours will be distributed throughout the relevant term, and will incorporate lectures, workshops and lab sessions.  Pedagogic approaches will include traditional and innovative styles including traditional, flipped and semi-flipped, and a range of supplementary learning materials.  Assessment mechanisms will vary by module, with a balance of coursework and examinations across the overall programme.

As part of guided independent study, students will be provided with theoretical and practical problems and exercises to consolidate and extend their learning.  They will also be provided with access to curated online resources to support development of technical skills, using for example DataCamp or Codecademy.

4. Programme Structure

The BSc Business Analytics is a 3 year full-time programme of study at National Qualification Framework (NQF) level 6 (as confirmed against the FHEQ). This programme is divided into units of study called modules which are each assigned a number of credits.  The credit rating of a module is proportional to the total workload, with 1 credit being nominally equivalent to 10 hours of work.  You will complete 120 credits of modules per year as detailed in section 5.  It is also possible to undertake 4 year variants of this course, BSc Business Analytics with Industrial Experience and BSc Business Analytics with Year Abroad.

You may take Optional Modules as long as any necessary prerequisites have been satisfied, where the timetable allows and if you have not already taken the module in question, or an equivalent module.

The Optional Modules listed are recommendations from the Programme Director as they closely align with the degree programme and compulsory modules. However please be aware you are not limited to this list of optional modules.

You may take Elective Modules up to 30 credits outside of the programme in all stages of the programme as long as any necessary prerequisites have been satisfied, where the timetable allows and if you have not already taken the module in question, or an equivalent module.
